The Military Transport Aviation (VTA, 61st Air Army) provides strategic air transport, parachute insertion of the VDV (airborne troops) and airlift capacity for expeditionary operations. The fleet consists of Il-76/Il-78 aircraft and heavy An-124/An-22 transports.
| Base | Unit | Aircraft |
|---|---|---|
| Migalovo (Tver) | 6955th AF Base | An-22, Il-76/78 |
| Pskov (Kresty) | AGp 6955th AFB | Il-76/78/476 |
| Orenburg | AGp 6955th AFB | Il-76/78/476 |
| Taganrog | AGp 6955th AFB | An-124, Il-76 |
| Sescha (Bryansk) | AGp 6955th AFB | An-124, Il-76 |
| Ivanovo (Severny) | AGp 6955th AFB | A-50 AWACS, Il-22, Mi-8 |
Ivanovo also hosts, besides transport, the A-50 "Mainstay" AWACS fleet. These scarce and high-value aircraft are crucial for airborne combat control (GCI) at range — and thus a high-value target. In Operation Spiderweb (June 2025) two A-50s were hit here, on top of the two shot down over the Sea of Azov in 2024 — a heavy blow for a fleet of barely nine aircraft. The VTA also carries the VDV: an independent service with its own light vehicles and artillery.
