The 6th Command of Air Force and Air Defence has, since the 2024 reorganisation, fallen under the new Leningrad Military District — created in response to the NATO accession of Finland and Sweden. It is the most NATO-oriented layer, with heavy fighter and strike units around Saint Petersburg and the isolated strike power in the exclave Kaliningrad — a forward A2/AD node between NATO members.

Kaliningrad in detail
The exclave is a forward fortress under the Baltic Fleet. The air component falls under the 132nd Mixed Aviation Division and the 44th Air Defence Division (HQ Gvardeisk, formed in 2014 from the 3rd Aerospace Defence Brigade). The aircraft are formally naval aviation of the Baltic Fleet, but operate within the integrated air defence.
| Unit | Location | Equipment |
|---|---|---|
| 689th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment | Chkalovsk | Su-27SM / Su-30SM2 (2 squadrons) |
| 4th Indep. Naval Assault Aviation Regiment | Chernyakhovsk | Su-30SM, Su-24M, Su-24MR |
| 183rd Guards Air Defence Missile Regiment | 44th AD Division | 2 battalions S-300P · 4 battalions S-400 · 6× Pantsir-S1 |
| 1545th Air Defence Missile Regiment | 44th AD Division | 2 battalions S-400 (since 2018–19; before that S-300V, later S-300PS) |
| 22nd Guards Air Defence Regiment | 11th Army Corps | Tor-M2 (short range, since 2019) |
| 81st Radio-Technical Regiment | 44th AD Division | Radar field / early warning |
Kaliningrad stacks all layers in one small area: fighters (Su-27/30), layered SAMs (S-400 → S-300 → Tor → Pantsir), its own RTV radar regiment, plus the Iskander-M missile brigade and the Bal/Bastion coastal systems. Together they form a dense A2/AD bubble covering the airspace over the Baltic and the Suwałki corridor — the most concentrated air-defence node in the entire VKS.
