§12.1 Explanation & method

Where the content of this learning environment comes from, how it was compiled and how to read it.

Open §12.1 in the academy

This learning environment is an educational summary of open sources. This chapter accounts for the sources consulted: by topic (§ 12.2), as a complete register (§ 12.3) and for the images (§ 12.4).

ItemExplanation
PurposeTo account for the open sources used for the chapters and threat cards of this learning environment.
MethodThe values on the threat cards and in the chapters are an educational aggregation of open sources: encyclopaedias, think tanks, trade press and OSINT, updated to mid-2026 knowledge. Distances in NM, altitudes in ft. Where sources differ, values are rounded or given as a range.
UpdatesSince July 2026 cards and chapters are updated with developments from the RU Mil Tracker (B68). The original source is then named in the text itself, for example "according to Militarnyi". The Recent open-source reporting and Analysed developments panels on each card are a live supplement and are not part of the curated card values.
ReliabilityFigures (range, altitude, numbers) differ between sources and change, especially in wartime. Wikipedia serves as a reference for general system data; where it matters, it has been checked against a second source.
Party sourcesSources such as eng.mil.ru, TASS, Voyennaya Mysl and the Kremlin are Russian state sources; HUR and SBU are Ukrainian government sources. Both are parties to the conflict. Treat their performance and loss figures as claims, not verified facts. They are marked as such in the register.
ImagesPhotos from Wikimedia Commons under a free licence; the relief under the map is from Natural Earth (public domain). See § 12.4.
Note

This learning environment is a training aid, not an intelligence product. Always verify independently before operational use.
